Master Bedroom Redo

As with most homes, our master bedroom is always last. It's the repository for dirty and clean clothes, the place where we throw things that don't have homes, and the pathway to the big tub, where everyday, three dirty little bodies clean up. It's a hardworking room, and it deserved to put its party clothes on, since it's one of the most used rooms in the house. This 4th of July, Sarah and I redid the room, and I'm loving the way it feels now. Especially since the total cost for the redo (minus the bed pillows, which came later) was less than $50.

Before:

We painted the room a few months ago, and I thrifted, painted, and got new shades for the 80s lamps a few months ago, too. The nightstands were fine, the bedskirt was fine, it just needed some pizzazz. I had thrifted some dark gold silk vintage drapes and had them cleaned months ago. Hanging them was another story, though, as I didn't want to spend over $100 for a super long drapery rod (I needed one that was at least 180" long!). I had a collection of old frames that needed some sprucing, as well as a collection of vintage oil paintings I've had forever. The main thrust was anchoring the room by painting the headboard and hanging the drapes. A trip to Target yielded two 15" towel rods that were perfect as curtain rods. I had the curtain rings, just spray painted them with a can of oil-rubbed bronze I had, and used the pins from the old drapes. In progress:

The painting is 8"x 10" and was nothing special, but with a fancy frame in the right color, it popped!

With the major changes in place, it was time to do surfaces. We painted a couple of the frames with some leftover interior wall paint and paintbrush, inserted the florals, cut down a few of the florals to fit smaller frames, and dressed up the bedding with pillows. I found a quilt in the linen closet that worked for a neutral base, then searched through my stash of vintage quilt tops to find one we liked best...one that was country and eclectic, but not too country. Sometimes it's a fine line. We got rid of some clutter on the nightstands by cleaning out the drawers, put the kids' clothes away on the window seat, dusted, and vacuumed. Here's the result, followed by a list of colors and sources used.

Colors and Sources:

  • Wall color: Mindful Gray by Sherwin-Williams
  • Headboard color: Fired Earth by Valspar at Lowe's
  • Lamp spray paint: Dolphins by Montana Gold with Walnut stain by Minwax on top
  • Towel rods, lamp shades: Target (although the website is not showing oil-rubbed bronze)
  • Gold pillow, gray pillow shams: HomeGoods
  • Hexagon Pillow from their Prism Bedding Line: Apt. 9 at Kohl's
  • Cream (with turquoise backing) quilt: Target from a few years ago

You and Sarah are magic. Loving your idea to hang the draperies on a towel bar especially. Such a great tip.
